Acer targeting robot business
Acer CEO Jason Chen revealed that the company is planning to invest in a firm that is mainly focusing on robot R&D, before the end of 2015, but he said that the business still requires some time to mature and is unlikely to make great contribution to the company in 2-3 years.
Acer also recently joined the funding of home-use robot Jibo development started by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Media Lab. In addition to Acer, Japan’s KDDI and Korea’s LG also made investments.Chen said that Acer’s investments in Jibo are not only for financial purposes, as the company is also looking to join Jibo’s sales system in Asia. Compared to Jibo, which is a more consumer-oriented investment, Acer’s investment in the robot R&D company is mainly eyeing the enterprise sector.Chen also noted that Acer will not invest in products such as industrial-use robotic arm and will look for targets that can be integrated with Acer’s Internet of things (IoT) and cloud computing businesses.
