AMS CHIP FAB FOR MARCY?
Is Marcy finally getting its chip fab?
Austria-based AMS has posted a news release on its website saying it is planning to build a chip fabrication plant in New York’s Tech Valley.
“AMS has entered into an agreement with the state of New York under which they will construct a new analog wafer fab to AMS specifications,” the release states. “The fab will be located in Tech Valley, the largest technology region in the U.S. and home to other nanotechnology and semiconductor companies.”
Officials from SUNY Polytechnic Institute, which owns a site in Marcy that has been groomed for a chip fabrication plant for more than a decade, issued a statement saying only that the state has entered into an agreement with AMS.
“At the direction of the governor, SUNY Poly has entered into a strategic research, development and manufacturing partnership with AMS,” the statement said. “We continue to work to finalize the agreement and no decisions have been made regarding the location of the fab.”
Such fabs can offer as many as 1,500 jobs, and also give rise to thousands more through the spin off businesses that often surround them.
SUNY Poly President and CEO Alain Kaloyeros said in an emailed statement that it’s still not known where the fab will be.
“I don’t know how anyone can claim they know where it is going when the research, development and manufacturing alliance agreement is between AMS and SUNY Poly, as directed by the governor, and we are putting together a short list of potential sites for him to decide,” he wrote.
