Magellan Diagnostics launches new, smaller test for blood lead levels
A Billerica company specializing in diagnostic tests to identify dangerously high lead levels in the blood is today launching a smaller, cheaper testtest is test aimed at small labs.
Magellan Diagnostics announced today it received FDA clearance for its LeadCare Plus Blood Lead Testing System. The device is smaller than a laptop and simple to use, and President Amy Winslow says it can help identify elevated blood levels not only in the U.S., where she said there are still more than half a million children exposed to high lead levels, but in other countries where it remains a larger problem.
“A lot of times people aren’t aware of it. They think lead poisoning comes from kids gnawing on window sills,” she said in an interview this week.

As a mother of two, Winslow says it’s an issue that she’s passionate about, despite a widespread belief that that problem is mostly solved except in very old apartments in the inner cities. Outside the U.S., she said it’s an even bigger problem in countries like China, India and Mexico, where she plans to get approval soon for the testtest is test. Symptoms of lead poisoning can go unnoticed for years, but it can result in irreverible brain damage.
